In April 1803, under President Thomas Jefferson’s guidance, Robert R. Livingston and James Monroe negotiated a monumental real estate deal in France.
Their goal was to acquire a vast North American territory, crucial for access to the port of New Orleans and vital for the economic growth of American settlers in the West.
Recognizing Napoleon Bonaparte’s urgent need for funds for his European campaigns, they skillfully negotiated to purchase over 827,000 square miles of land for pennies on the dollar.
This deal, the largest in real estate history, doubled the size of the United States overnight.
