“That day, only one American is going to drown.”
That’s a quote a buddy of mine told me during his time as a Pararescue jumper in the Air Force.
His job was to parachute in behind enemy lines and rescue downed allies.
Mountains, jungle, sea, it didn’t matter.
His only focus was getting them out.
Now imagine jumping out of a helicopter and swimming over to the guy, and he’s panicking, crawling all over you, risking both your lives.
You try to shake him and snap him out of it…
…and if he keeps going crazy, you’re taught to punch him in the face and swim away.
I share this with you because this lesson for you isn’t about saving somebody else from drowning.
It’s about saving yourself from drowning in life, in business, and on the road to success.
You’re gonna come across people who, no matter how hard you shake them, don’t want to be saved.
They’re stuck in their ways and they’re holding you back.
And sometimes you have to leave them behind.
Or they’re gonna drown you right along with them.
They’ll drown you in their emotions and their drama.
Drown you in debt and bad deals.
And drown your time and energy.
Until there’s nothing left for the people and the business that actually need you.
In business, it might be the partner who’s dragging the company in the opposite direction, or the client who costs you more than he pays.
In life it might be a friend you’ve known for twenty years.
Make no mistake, it’s a hard truth. Sometimes the people you have to leave behind are the ones you care about the most…
…but it’s a reality of growth.
You’re building your legacy.
You’re setting the example for your family, your community, and yourself, and that means making the tough decisions most people spend years avoiding.
So take control of your future, even if it means swimming away from some people.
