From 2010 to 2013, Fit Body Boot Camp was stuck.
Growth, revenue, and profits flatlined for almost three years. I tried new marketing, new sales processes, hired experts and consultants…
…and nothing moved the needle.
Then I finally figured out the problem, and it was me.
I was designing the workouts, selling the franchises, negotiating leases, mapping territories, AND running HQ.
That’s when I learned the lesson that changed everything:
What gets you from zero to something does NOT take you from something to scale.
Look, the hustle, the grind, the “I can do it all, I’ll wear every hat” attitude is exactly what gets a business off the ground.
But that same thing stops working the day you try to scale, and that’s why you start feeling stuck.
You’re the founder, and you’re the bottleneck.
I share this with you because if your business feels stuck right now, there’s a good chance you’re standing right where I was.
AND IF YOU’RE STILL WEARING ALL THE HATS, YOU FIT INTO ONE OF TWO BOXES:
1) You’re too cheap.
You look at what it costs to hire staff and build out processes and systems, and you tell yourself you’ll just do it yourself and save the money.
So you “save” a salary and spend 30 hours a week on $20 an hour work, while the stuff only you can do sits there untouched.
2) You’re too much of a control freak.
“This is my baby. No one can do it as good as me.”
Dude, I’ve said those exact words, and I’ve got three flat years to show for it.
I’m all for being a control freak about your time, your standards, and where the company is headed. But when you’re a control freak about who answers the phone and who sends the invoices, you drag everybody down with you.
Either way, cheap or control freak, you end up doing your business, your customers, and your whole industry a disservice.
Your customers get a tired, stretched-thin version of you. Your team never grows because you won’t hand them anything that matters. And the company can only get as big as the number of hours you can stay awake.
Once I got out of my own way, put the right people in place, and built the processes, Fit Body grew into hundreds of locations.
So ask yourself which one you are, and be honest about it.
Then pick one hat this week and hand it to somebody.
And if you want the systems that let me take mine off…
