Maybe it’s because I grew up without a smartphone and the internet that I see it a little differently than most.
Because the way I see it, marketing didn’t start with Facebook ads.
The oldest known cave painting on earth is about 51,000 years old. It’s in a cave in Indonesia, and it’s a pig.
Now I can’t tell you if that was art or an ad. But some caveman went through the trouble of grinding up red rock and painting a pig on a wall so everybody in the tribe would look at it, and that’s about as close to a billboard as you can get without a highway.
Fast forward to the “prehistoric” era of marketing I actually studied, and the tools weren’t much better.
No social media.
No email lists.
No ad platforms.
The OG marketers I learned from used:
– Public speaking events as their social media
– Direct mailers and address books as their email list
– Newspaper classified ads as their “targeted” ad platform
Now think about that…
How insanely hard must it have been to grow a business back then?
And even crazier?
Some of those time-tested strategies STILL work like gangbusters today. And many have evolved to work even better online.
Take urgency for example. Decades ago it was a newspaper ad with a deadline to respond. Today it’s a limited-time webinar, a fast-action bonus, or a DM offer that closes in 24 hours.
Same psychology, just on new platforms.
Anyone can start a business. Not everyone can scale one.
I share this with you because nowadays anyone can START a business.
But not everyone can SCALE one.
Why?
Because most people are copying the same cringey content templates, cold email scripts from ChatGPT, and BS ad strategies they found from some “gooroo” on Instagram, and then they wonder why a strategy built to get views isn’t building them a business.
That’s where the caveman method comes in. It’s three rules, and none of them are new.
- If it worked on a cave wall, it works on a screen. What worked in direct mail still works in your email list. What worked in a classified ad still works in your ad creative. Human behavior hasn’t changed in 51,000 years. Just the platform you’re using to reach people.
- Master the principle before you touch the tool. The tools are gonna change again in 18 months. The reason a deadline makes someone buy, or a story makes someone trust you, will be the same when your grandkids are running ads on whatever comes after Instagram.
- Get it installed by someone who’s done it. Knowing the principle and having it running in your business are two different things, and most entrepreneurs are stuck at the first one.
