Someone asked me a great question the other day:

“If AI makes intelligence cheap and easy to get, what becomes more valuable?”

Look, the robots are coming. AI is gonna keep getting smarter and cheaper every year, and most AI companies are pushing to make everything affordable.

So I answered with a story about an airplane.

There’s a YouTube channel I watch run by a guy called Captain Steve. 

He flew for American Airlines for 34 years, and now he breaks down everything that goes wrong on airplanes. (I fly a lot, so yes, I scare myself on purpose.)

Lately he’s been talking about Congress floating the idea of one pilot plus AI in the cockpit instead of two pilots. 

Then he broke down a flight where the captain threw up and passed out about 20 seconds before landing.

The co-pilot grabbed control and told the tower, “We’re 19 seconds from touchdown. I have control of the airplane. The captain is incapacitated. I need medical on the runway.”

They landed, the paramedics were waiting, and the captain survived what turned out to be food poisoning.

Now put AI in that seat. Maybe it lands the plane. 

But it can’t see that the captain just passed out, so nobody calls for help.

I share this with you because that story is the whole answer. When intelligence gets cheap, three things get expensive:

Discernment: AI can run a process all day, but it can’t look across the cockpit and notice something’s wrong. In your business, that’s the gut call when a client’s tone changes or a deal starts to smell off.

Leadership: AI can’t lead and it can’t delegate. It does what you told it to do and waits for the next command. Deciding what matters next is still your job.

Accountability: AI can build you a nutrition plan or a business plan, but when you skip the workout or blow off your sales calls, ChatGPT doesn’t give two sh!ts. If you and I are supposed to train at 8:00am and I don’t show up, you’re calling me to make sure I’m okay. Nobody wants to let down another human. (Hell, we don’t even want to let down our dogs.)

So let AI handle the processes, and double down on the three things it can’t touch.
